Women's Day Exhibition

Tshwaranang Legal Advocacy Centre (TLAC) is a multi-disciplinary centre that promotes the rights of women to live free of violence and have access to adequate and appropriate services. This is done through the provision of free legal services and litigation, public education, research and advocacy.
TLAC is hosting a Women’s Day Exhibition under the theme “A Brick Wall: “Rape and the Criminal Justice System” from 5-26 August 2010 in Johannesburg.

It is a shocking reality that only 6 of every 100 reported rapes will result in a conviction. This dismal statistic is one of the reasons that 8 out of 9 women who are raped do not report the matter to the police.

Please join us at the launch of our exhibition that seeks to represent the ongoing difficulties faced by women seeking legal redress after a sexual offence. The exhibition takes the form of a photographic and video installation featuring material gathered ‘in the field’ and, in some instances, supplied by the affected women themselves.

The exhibition also marks the launch of the Shukumisa Campaign which aims to shake up the way sexual offences are dealt with in South Africa. The Campaign offers everyone the opportunity to contribute to improving the treatment of rape survivors by the criminal justice system. Visit www.shukumisa.org.za
